If you’ve read Teaming Up in the Kitchen: Matt’s Sweet Potato Fries you’ll know that both Matthew and I believe we are the top chef in the kitchen. Instead of this leading to conflict as you would think, it usually leads to a rather splendid multi-course meal.
When planning dinner, we usually think of what we have on hand, and take it from there. We do all the planning, shopping, and chopping together. His precision cooking mixed with my flavor creativity has made for some great meals.
One thing that Matthew always seems to have on hand is ground turkey meat, which he likes to buy in bulk and freeze. Although I am always in favor of the freshest ingredients, it is not always possible to go to the store every day when also working and fitting in a workout. When in a pinch, turkey burgers are our go to.
Turkey burgers are quick, easy, comforting, and healthy. We like to eat ours in a whole wheat pita with fresh tomatoes, pickles, avocado, and red onion.
Turkey Burger
Ingredients
For the patty:
- 1 package ground turkey meat
- 1 egg
- 1/4 vidalia onion
- 1 pinch salt
- Fresh ground pepper
- pinch cumin
- pinch garlic powder
Bun:
- I like using whole wheat pita bread
Toppings
- Fresh spinach
- Heirloom tomato
- Red Onion
- Fresh Avocado
- Avocado tomatillo salsa
Directions
Dice onion.
In a large bowl, mix turkey meat, egg, onion, and spices.
Heat a pan over medium heat with a very thin layer of olive oil. Using your hands, form medium sized patties.
Cook patties for approximately five minutes on each side. Burgers should be cooked all the way through and lightly browned on each side.
Serve burgers with your choice of toppings and condiments. I personally like red onion, spinach, avocado, and tomato.
